Monument Mountain

Monument Mountain

Snowmobile into the tundra on gold mining trails for a look at the vastness of Alaska’ s Copper River Valley. On a clear day you can see distant Mt Drum volcano and far off Nelchina Glacier beyond the rolling hills and spindly black Spruce forests. Climb the hills to a universal lookout at Monument Mountain if visibility conditions permit. Keep an eye out for flocks of ptarmigan, Alaska’s state bird and roving bands of caribou. Start and finish from the comfort of the Eureka Lodge (closed Tuesdays) along the Alaska Highway through the Matanuska River Valley north of Matanuska Glacier.
